The Sense of Music

Interview with ^L_

^L_: «I have played in clubs in Berlin, Hamburg (at the legendary Golden Pudel), Leipzig, Bavaria and in Brazil»

Brazilian electronic music producer Luis Fernando grants us an interview as a paradigm of his vocation and the essence that led him to become the artist he is today.

At what age did you first become attracted to electronic music? What styles of electronic music did you start listening to?

I started getting into electronic music as a teenager, when I was 14 or 15. I started getting into important electronic music artists like Aphex Twin, Autechre, LFO and classics like Depeche Mode, Nine Inch Nails, Front 242, Einstürzende Neubauten and more… but the records that really got me into electronic music were Primal Scream’s “Screamadelica” and Aphex Twin’s “Selected Ambient Works”. I remember listening to it and thinking: “this is the future”.

Who are your role models?

My main references are IDM and other experimental music. I am fascinated by contrasts, from the most extreme and heavy sounds like hardcore techno, industrial music, noise artists like Merzbow and even ambient music giants like Brian Eno and minimalists like PhilIp Glass and Steve Reich. I always refer to books and works and try to address themes like cyberpunk culture, entropy, politics, melancholy and anger.

Do you know how to play an instrument? Have you ever performed or would you like to perform a live/performance with an instrumental?

Yes, I am guitarist I am a trained musician and play instruments such as drums, piano, violin and trumpet. In the future I am interested in presenting a show with modular synthesizers, acoustic drums, piano or organs. But it is still a distant project, I have to work hard on the idea.

How did you get into producing music?

I played in an indie band where I was vocalist and guitarist. I started in the late 90s, still very young… in the early 00s I started using software for production, recording demos and everything happened naturally. And since 2014 I use the name ^L_ to release my works.

Besides producing, do you play in clubs? If so, which clubs have you had the opportunity to play in?

I have played in clubs in Berlin, Hamburg (at the legendary Golden Pudel), Leipzig, Bavaria and Brazil. I stopped doing live shows to devote myself exclusively to recording. If by chance I ever get interested in playing in clubs again, I would be happy to hear it. straightI would like to do it in small theaters.

How do you define the style of your productions? What sets your work apart from others in the same genre?

I have never compared my work to that of other artists. Honestly, I prefer not to make those kinds of comparisons. There are so many differences and peculiarities between everyone that it is impossible to compare.

What do you want to convey with each of your works?

I try to express my fears and anxieties. Music for me has always been a way to spit out all our feelings. It is an escape tool for me. First of all, I make music for myself, if people like it, I am very happy and grateful. But I compose for myself, and I don't mind being criticized when I compose about topics that are considered heavy: sad, angry, and angry. Honestly, that's what I know how to do. I want my music to reach people who feel like that, disoriented, melancholic, angry.

With which labels have you released your latest tracks?

Antime Records in Berlin releases most of my work and is my home. But I also release tracks and EPs on major labels in the US, Canada, Russia, London, Paris and Tokyo… labels that I really like and am very happy to work with.

What would you highlight about your career as an artist?

I hope it hasn't happened yet.

Do you have any new projects in the works?

I am finishing my next album (the follow-up to the EP «THE SKULL»), which will be released by Antime Records, which also publishes my recent album «THE SKULL».
