The Sense of Music

Interview with Alexandre Laeddis

Interview with Alexandre Laeddis

We talk to Alexandre Laeddis, producer and DJ of vinyls from Barcelona. In each of their sets you can hear a progression from Techno, mainly from albums released between 1998 and 2005 on labels from England, Sweden or Germany.

According to him, he has a long career, having had the opportunity to perform at Anomalie in Berlin with Room Trax, Hör Berlin, Razzmatazz in Barcelona, Radion in Amsterdam with Antidote, Gare de Porto with Phase.ctv, Exil in Zurich, Dabadaba in Donosti and in his favourite industrial estate, which he considers his home, in Madrid with Utopia Society and with Phase.ctv, a collective in which he is a resident.

Where does your predilection for electronics come from?

I've been familiar with electronic music since 2008, but I fell in love with it in 2019 on my first visit to Berghain. I saw that this is the way and the place for this music. It's a perfect circle. It makes perfect sense in this way. Everything else is approximations, some of them very real and transmitting very similar sensations, but that's the only way it should be.

How would you define your productions? What elements do they consist of, which ones would you highlight? Do you have other akas for productions of other genres?

I would define my productions as tools for the DJ. It is not music to listen to at home or with headphones, it is music made for the dance floor.

“Each production is made up of the minimum elements. Direct, raw and fresh. 909, a synth and that's it”

From within it is difficult to see if my essence or my personal brand is in my productions, but sometimes when I have asked my close producer friends they have told me that it can be appreciated.

At the moment I don't have an aka for another genre, although I don't rule it out. Even so, I like the genre too much. Techno 4×4 and I doubt it will get out of there.

What can you tell us about your label Hemisferio Records? Which artists have been able to release music on it? What is the future of your label?

Hemisferio Records was founded primarily to release music that I had made. I didn't have any idea about anything at the time, I just wanted to release music under a label so I wouldn't release it out of nowhere.

The label is focused on dancefloor music. Hemisferio has released music from friends like Judy, Not A Headliner and R-010, to figures that currently represent the present and future of Techno like Decoder, NYCO or Nicolas Vogler.

A few days ago, an EP by R-010, a friend and producer from Madrid, was released on Hemisferio.

As for the label's projection, I want to change direction and release music only in vinyl format.

Have you released any music on vinyl yet? What are your best productions for you? Have you collaborated with any artists?

My first vinyl is a collaboration with Judy that will be released this year. It's a joint release by Phase.ctv with Heist Mode.

All my productions (and all productions) have something that makes them better.

“There will always be a time and a place for someone to play that song and make it sublime”

Which labels and artists have been a great inspiration for you? What is your favourite track?

My production influences are The Advent, Stigmata, Jeff Mills, Stef Mendesidis and labels like Primate, MB Elektronics, Sino, Conform, Proper NYC, Phont Music and many more.

At DJ level, Ángel Molina, Óscar Mulero, Jeff Mills, Freddy K, Dj Frequency and Laure Croft.

My favorite track could be said to be Technasia – Evergreen III

Out of curiosity, what other genres of music (outside of electronic) do you enjoy? What song(s) would you highlight?

Apart from electronic music, I enjoy classical music, some disco, funk and artists or groups like Alaska, Miguel Bosé, Mecano and Joan Manuel Serrat.

Songs to highlight… “Mediterráneo” by Joan Manuel Serrat and any song by Sade. The feeling it generates in me is immediate. It is something between admiration, pleasure and well-being. It is the music I listened to in the summer when I was little on vacation with my parents.

Can you give us some details about your upcoming performances?

I'll be tearing up the track soon at the Soundit in Barcelona
