We interview Dead Violets Night
Frank's Garage and its sound journey through vinyl in the EBM scene
In an increasingly digitalized world, where music is consumed primarily through streaming platforms and digital downloads, there is one corner where analog sounds and the essence of vinyl are still revered. At the heart of this reverence lies Frank's Garage, a project that began as a modest digital magazine to explore and share the music that its founders are passionate about. Over time, this project has evolved to become something much deeper: a record label specialising in vinyl with the aim of giving voice to the currents of the EBM genre.
In this exclusive interview, we delve into the world of El Garaje de Frank with its founder Dead Violets Night, exploring from their modest beginnings to their ambitious plans for the future. We uncover their passion for EBM, their commitment to analogue sounds and their vital role in promoting emerging artists in the music scene. From the artist selection process to vinyl production and promotion, we dive into every facet of this exciting project, whilst exploring their influence on music culture and their dedication to preserving the authenticity of vinyl in an increasingly digital world.
1. How did the idea of founding El Garaje de Frank both as a record label and a magazine come about?
We started as a digital magazine about seven years ago, initially to talk about the music we liked. Over time, both artists and new bands started to contact us and we tried to promote those that seemed most interesting to us. More or less that is what led us to create the label.
We want to give voice to proposals that we believe are worthwhile. An example of this is Vexillary, a New York artist we met a few years ago and have supported ever since. We thought his music was perfect for our first launch and he was already an artist known to our readers.
2. What is the main mission behind El Garaje de Frank and how does it relate to the EBM music genre?
To give some exposure to some styles of music that don't appear in more mainstream media. EBM is one of our favorite genres and although in the magazine we also talk about less electronic styles like post-punk, we are going to direct the label in a more EBM/electro/industrial.
3. What motivated you to specialize in vinyl in an era dominated by digital? How do you think this affects the listening experience of EBM music?
For me dance music is closely related to the vinylsI don't separate one from the other. I like playing vinyl and that's why I always knew that if I ever created a label, it would be specialized in vinyl. I think we're in a good moment for vinyl, with many labels releasing exclusive material on this format.
4. How do you select the artists and projects you decide to work on? What characteristics do you look for in them?
For the first reference we have worked with Vexillary, as we have commented and with a friend's group, Sons of InnocenceThe songs of this Spanish-Italian trio passed through several hands, including those of the producer of electro environment. Since he only wanted to publish them digitally, Javi Xtraperlo, he passed them to me and from there the idea of making an album arose.
For the second release, we have been contacted by a well-known producer of the genre, with whom we have a very good relationship because we interviewed him years ago. We want to see what songs he proposes to us, and if we like them. I think that a second release with a well-known name could be good for the label. In general, we look for artists who have a personal vibe, a powerful and aggressive sound.
5. How do you see El Garaje de Frank's role in the current EBM music scene? Have you noticed any significant changes in the genre over the years?
I think the scene has grown a lot in recent years and has become much more modern. There are many producers doing very modern and different things…which have even started to reach a younger audience again. Now you have techno/EBM or mixtures close to synth punk that are attracting young people to the scene. I think it's a good time for this music.
6. In addition to releasing vinyl, you also have a magazine. How do these two facets of El Garaje de Frank complement each other? How is the culture of EBM music promoted through the magazine?
With the magazine we make contacts and receive many promos from artists who are not so well known. We talk a lot about EBM at the Garage and whenever we can we try to interview labels or artists of the genre.
7. What are the future plans for El Garaje de Frank both as a record label and a magazine? Do you have any exciting projects in the works?
We are thinking about the second reference as we said before and we continue doing interviews for the magazine. This year we already have some prepared that are going to be very good.
8. What advice would you give to emerging artists who want to get involved in the EBM music scene and collaborate with El Garaje de Frank?
Be patient, you're not going to get rich with this. If you're passionate about the genre, give it a go and send us a message so we can get to know your material.
9. Which groups could you highlight for their musical culture and their contribution to the current scene?
Labels I can name a few that are releasing a lot of interesting material within the EBM, such as Oracle, SOIL, Fill-Lex Recods and Banshee Records. Our friend Karl hosts some EBM parties in Madrid called Electroshock in the mythical Gray. The people of the Shadow, apart from the magnificent festival, they always organize events in which there is some EBM and in Madrid in the DarkMad You can also hear something like that. As artists, both Spammerheads as JG Outsider, from the national, I liked them lately.
10. Finally, how would you like people to perceive El Garaje de Frank and its contribution to EBM music and vinyl culture?
Like fighters. Ha, ha, ha. We are a couple who are passionate about music; the magazine and the label are our way of expressing it.
