Tresor revives the legacy of Blake Baxter with Dream Sequence X

History Spins Again with the Reissue of Blake Baxter on June 20

A Look at the Origins of Techno

In 2025, Tresor Records launches a vital retrospective: the chronological reissue of Blake Baxter’s entire catalog— a key figure in the genesis of Detroit techno and house. The journey begins with Dream Sequence (1992) and will continue with Endless Reflection (1995), two records that not only defined a sonic aesthetic but also cemented the historical connection between Detroit and Berlin.

Dream Sequence X: Vinyl as a Time Capsule

To kick off the series, Tresor is releasing a special vinyl titled Dream Sequence X, available from June 20, featuring four remastered tracks from Baxter’s early years. The EP captures his most raw and minimalist side — hard, jacking, physical techno infused with industrial echoes, post-punk textures, and distorted funk.

Blistering 909 drums, razor-sharp synth stabs, and robotic Speak & Spell samples reconstruct the '90s rave energy with renewed clarity. Remastered by Manmade Mastering, these tracks come back to life with power and precision for today’s dance floors.

Detroit, Berlin, and the birth of a language

Baxter began producing music in 1985, deeply influenced by Black music, funk, and punk. He was part of the foundational core behind labels like Underground Resistance, KMS and Incognito. His inclusion in the landmark UK compilation Techno! The New Dance Sound of Detroit played a crucial role in introducing the genre to Europe and solidifying the term “techno.”

In 1992, during UR’s first European tour, Baxter landed in Berlin to perform at Tresor. That trip marked the beginning of a lasting relationship with the label — sharing stages with artists like Jeff Mills, Robert Hood and Mike Banks— and helped establish a transatlantic connection that still defines the global pulse of electronic music today.

Beyond Nostalgia: A Living Archive

Though later known for his sensual vocals and a more house-oriented approach, Dream Sequence X brings back a raw, unfilteredBlake Baxter. This isn’t just a historical reissue — it’s a necessary reactivation.

In a scene where history often gets lost in fleeting trends, Tresor reminds us that returning to the roots isn’t nostalgia — it’s cultural resistance. And few artists embody that resistance better than Blake Baxter.
